George Michael: Why I Was on Self Destruct
George Michael: Why I Was on Self Destruct
The singer says on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, on which he is the
guest castaway today, that, as the youngest son in his "patriarchal"
family, he was indulged and could "do what he liked".
He told presenter Kirsty Young: "I grew up with this terrible
feeling of guilt, knowing that I was always the one who would get the
easy ride.
"I finally realised that one reason why my life... has felt so
self-destructive is that I never had any feeling my talent was going to
let me down."
George Michael Says Trying to Smoke Less Marijuana

Michael Says Trying to Smoke Less Marijuana:
Michael revealed in Sunday's interview he has completed 50 hours of
his sentence, helping people with mental health problems as well as drug
addiction.
"I've also scrubbed down some very dirty rooms," added Michael,
"and make chicken fajitas for some homeless people. I was quite good
apparently."
Michael ended years of speculation about his sexuality by announcing
he was gay after he was arrested in 1998 for engaging in a "lewd
act" in a
Los Angeles public toilet.
"In a strange way I've spent the last 15 to 20 years trying to
derail my own career, but it never seems to suffer," said Michael,
who completed a 25th anniversary tour earlier this year.
"I suffer like crazy. I've suffered bereavements and public humiliations,
but my career always seems to right itself like a plastic duck in the
bath. In some ways I resent that."

Drugs Aren't a Problem, Says George Michael
Drugs Aren't a Problem, Says George Michael:
George Michael will speak about drugs, his recent community service
order and his driving ban on this morning's Desert Island Discs on Radio
4. The singer talks about his heavy use of marijuana, but says he is lucky
enough to have the income to support the habit: 'Do I wish I could use
it less? Sure, but is it a problem in my life? No,' he tells Kirsty Young.
In June, 44-year-old Michael was convicted of driving under the influence
of prescription drugs and ordered to do 100 hours community service. He
says he believes his childhood in north London as a favoured son in a
traditional Greek family led to feelings of guilt about his easy passage
through childhood. Despite his own attempts to sabotage his future, he
says it always rights itself 'like a plastic duck in a bath'. Amy Winehouse
and Kanye West are two of his choices on the show.

George Michael Plea
Klair sends us
George Michael Plea:
George Michael has voiced his support for troubled star Amy Winehouse.
George, 44, calls Winehouse “the best female vocalist I’ve heard in
my entire career.”
He hopes she will get all the support she needs in her battle with
drugs and says: “She is a fantastic talent and we should support her.”
The former Wham! Frontman, who has sold more than 85 million records,
will be appearing on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 on Sunday at 11.15am
and again on Friday at 9.02am.
He tells presenter Kirsty Young: "This is the best female vocalist
I've heard in my entire career and one of the best writers, so all I can
say (to Amy) is, 'Please, please understand how brilliant you are', and
I wish her every success in the future.”
George also tells Kirsty he believes a bang on the head when he was
a young boy changed his life.
"I had been obsessed with insects and creepy crawlies, I used
to get up at five o'clock in the morning and go out into this field behind
our garden and collect insects before everyone else got up and, suddenly,
all I wanted to know about was music, it just seemed a very, very strange
thing.
"I have a theory that maybe it was something to do with this
accident, this whole left-brain right-brain thing.
"Nobody in my family seemed to notice but I became absolutely
obsessed with music and everything changed after that."

Singer Pokes Fun at Himself in Ricky Gervais Comedy
Singer Pokes Fun at Himself in Ricky Gervais Comedy:
George Michael is to star in a special Christmas episode of Extras.
And as usual comedy writers Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have pulled
out all the stops to make it as embarrassing as possible.
The one-off show will see the 40-year-old ex-Wham star mock his own antics
by cruising for gay sex on London's Hampstead Heath while smoking a joint
and tucking into a juicy kebab.

Others who jumped into the
download bandwagon include ABC, who just struck a deal with AOL to make
full-length episodes available for free a week after they initially air,
via a co-branded version of ABC.com’s broadband player on AOL video. Under
the deal, four episodes per series of shows such as: "The Bachelor,"
"Big Shots," "Brothers & Sisters," "Carpoolers,"
"Cavemen," "Dancing with the Stars," "Desperate
Housewives," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Eli Stone,"
"Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Men In Trees,"
"October Road," "Private Practice," "Pushing
Daisies," "Samantha Who?" and "Ugly Betty" will

Michael Cuts HIV Interview:
Pop star George Michael has asked for an interview in which he discusses
his fears of having HIV to be removed from a forthcoming BBC programme.
The BBC has confirmed the interview will no longer feature in the
documentary, Stephen Fry: HIV and Me.
Michael's former partner, Anselmo Feleppa, died of an Aids-related
illness in 1995.
"On reflection, he felt it was too close and too personal a journey,"
said a spokesman for the singer, 44.

A Very British Affair
A Very British Affair:
Tracey Emin, enfant terrible of Brit art, made her first trip to Dallas
last week for the closing of her show at the Goss-Michael Foundation,
formerly Goss Gallery. (Owner Kenny Goss and his partner, singer George
Michael, have changed it to a private art space.)
Accompanied by her boyfriend, photographer Scott Douglas, Ms. Emin
was applauded at a Thursday dinner at Goss-Michael where Dallas Museum
of Art director Jack Lane spoke about her importance in the art world.
The British Council chose Ms. Emin to produce a show of new work for the
British Pavilion at this year's 52nd Venice Biennale.
Other guests at the dinner included composer David Austin (George
Michael's lifelong friend), Michael Lippman (George's longtime manager)
and Goss- Michael Foundation curator Filippo Tattoni-Marcozzi.

Eli Stone: TV writer-producer Greg Berlanti is ABC's golden boy
TV writer-producer Greg Berlanti is ABC's golden boy:
So far, the only madness surrounding Berlanti's pet project, "Eli
Stone," has been landing pop star George Michael as a recurring guest
star.
Yes, you read that right.
The former Wham! frontman appears as a sort of guardian angel to the
title character (Jonny Lee Miller), a lawyer having larger-than-life visions.
"If Eli's having a spiritual epiphany, George is very much the
herald," says Berlanti.
After Berlanti wrote the pilot with partner Marc Guggenheim, he was
told there was no way they'd land the singer to play himself. They wrote
a few drafts featuring other artists, but none seemed quite right.
But Michael loved the script and asked Berlanti to meet him at his
Dallas home. That meeting went so well, Berlanti was off to London to
oversee the shooting of Michael's first scenes. (He's headed to L.A. this
month for more installments.
He sings in the episodes, too, titled after tunes like "Faith"
and "Freedom."
"When George said yes, we sort of saw that as a sign that we
were on the right track with the show," says Berlanti.

TwentyFive Review
While this
review starts out sounding negative, it ends with "From the way-back-in-time
Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go to the irresistible Fastlove, it encompasses
much of what was good about 1980s music and how it laid the foundation
for the big club hits of today. For this, and more — oh, so much more
— Michael is definitely a shoe-in for pop’s all-time hall of fame."

Rye's Greg Berlanti is ABC's Super Producer
Rye's Greg Berlanti is ABC's Super Producer:
His mid-season show, “Eli Stone,” is about a ruthless attorney who
starts having visions of George Michael.
(Yes, that George Michael … from Wham!)
Anyway, everyone told Greg and his partner, Marc Guggenheim, that
they’d never get the singer to play himself. Turns out Mr. Michael is
an avid TV watcher, and he loved the show’s pilot script.
Here’s Greg talking about the process of getting George on board.
(And who knew the very British pop star was a part-time Texas resident?)
