George Michael Premieres Song for Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s Wedding

Amazon Ad

George Michael premieres his new song, a charity gift for Catherine Middleton and Prince William’s wedding, on Piers Morgan Tonight at 9 p.m. ET.

George said on Twitter: “Im (sic) REALLY happy with it… and I know Diana would have approved. She had a copy of Older 4 months before any of you lot!”

The Idea for the Song

Well, it’s actually very, very — well, the idea came to me last week, actually, about a week ago, that I should — that I should, perhaps, kind of express my happiness at this marriage in a way publicly. You know, it was a very beautiful summer — it wasn’t summer’s day. But it was an April day that happened to be like summer here in London.

And I was twittering and kind of got carried away and decided I was going to make them a new track. Give everybody on Twitter and William and Kate a new track by Friday. So, I’ve had a very busy week.

And the strange thing about this song, actually, considering I think it’s probably the best two days work I’ve ever done in my life, two or three days work, is that when I was a child, I dreamt of singing this song in my imagination. You know, my idea of fame at the time was the school assembly hall. I was about 12. And I had this record, this Stevie Wonder song. And I used to dream of singing it in school assembly hall. But I guess this is slightly bigger deal than that.

George Michael on CNN on April 15, 2011

The Song as a Gift to Catherine and William

So — and also the main thing about doing the song as a gift for them is not just a gift for them, it’s a gift that they will be able to hopefully turn into many, many donations for the royal charity, the royalweddingcharityfund.org that is, you know — which is where they asked people to give money rather than send presents of any description. I don’t know if that includes the people at the actual wedding, I don’t know if they’ve given out their toasters and their, you know, their – the wedding list, as it were, but seems very generously that they have, yes.

So, anyway, I would really like for any of my fans, or anybody who really enjoys this track, if they’re going to download it for free, which is absolutely what I’m willing to do, I would like them to go to Kate and William’s charity site and make a donation. You know, if they’re genuinely happy for these two people, which I think a lot of people are, you know?

Message on William and Catherine’s Wedding Day

Oh, I think they should — I don’t think they need any advice from me. I think the message I would give — I’m just incredibly happy for both of them. And more than anything, you know, there was a kind of — I have quite an emotional attachment to what’s going on here because I felt so bad for those boys when she (Princess Diana) passed away, and having experienced losing my mother about three or four months before that, that day was very, very strange for me.

And also, you know, when I think of what — the devastation of losing my mother, the idea of going through that when you’re not into your teens or barely into your teens is just — I just — I can’t just — words can’t describe how much admiration I have for the way that they’ve both coped with it and especially when, you know, the media has made it so much more difficult for them. I’m just incredibly happy for — incredibly happy for William, incredibly happy for his partner, and I absolutely am sure that Diana would have loved the whole thing, you know?

And I really hope that she would have loved this track. I have a feeling, she would have done — she was a big fan and she had a copy of “Older,” which is obviously an album about bereavement, about four or five months before it went out into the public eye, and she loved it. And I did once see a documentary where William was playing that album which makes me think that he found it comforting. And it was an album about bereavement. So, I was very touched by that.

The whole thing has kind of different levels of meaning for me. And I’m just incredibly happy that they’re letting me actually, you know, have some part of the benefit site, the charity site, you know? Or at least they’re letting me share some of the attention for this amazing day in a way to raise money, you know, which is great.

George Michael Gifts New Song for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding

Amazon Ad

In honor of the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, George Michael will be releasing a song on Twitter to celebrate the occasion.

He will be working on the track on Tuesday and will release it on Friday as a “twitterhug.” The only hints he’s given as to the name of the song are that it starts with “You” and “It was written in the seventies by a genius…..”

This article has been updated to include the song that George Michael sang for William and Catherine’s wedding and the lyrics.

“You and I (We Can Conquer the World)” is a song written and sung by Stevie Wonder from his 1972 album Talking Book (sponsored link).

The lyrics for “You and I” are:

George Michael on Twitter

I really have to disagree with “A crash course in how to tweet,” which critiques George Michael’s tweeting skills.

George has been great about trying out Twitter, and it’s nice to see him connect with his fans at such a personal level. I think he’s doing great, far better than I’m doing on Twitter!

The majority of fans following George Michael on Twitter would, of course, know that George’s comment to “Martin” was of course to Martin Kemp.  Most of us are following Martin Kemp as well as Shirlie Kemp.  Oh, and to the writer of this article, Shirlie is spelled with an “ie” and not “ey”

Karma for George Michael

George is quoted as saying the following in his interview with Chris Evans, which will air on Monday:

“I was assured I wasn’t going to prison but I thought I was, and it was much easier to take because I felt it was deserved,” he said, in an interview to be broadcast Monday.

“This was a hugely shameful thing to have done repeatedly so karmically I felt like I had a bill to pay. I went to prison, I paid my bill.

“Remarkably enough — I know people must think it was a really horrific experience — it’s so much easier to take any form of punishment if you believe you actually deserve it, and I did.”

New Orders Take on George Michael’s True Faith

According to George Michael covers New Order for Comic Relief:

Former New Order bassist Peter Hook told the BBC Michael’s version was a “beautiful” interpretation but admitted it was “not exactly to my taste”.

According to Hook, the band became friends with the former Wham! singer in the 1980s when they would attend the same parties in the US.

“It’s a very, very George Michael interpretation of the song and it’s beautiful for that,” he said.

“It’s very flattering. George doing True Faith is such a great compliment.

“It blew me away when I heard it. Not exactly to my taste, but it did blow me away.

“I think he’s done a fantastic version and I’m delighted that it’s for such a good cause.”

George Michael Partying Down Under

Is George Michael out promoting the re-release of Faith?  Nope.  He’s in Australia having a good time:

And it looks like he has found a new pal in Packed to the Rafters star, and budding jazz/pop performer, Hugh Sheridan.

It’s understood the unlikely pair crossed paths at celebrity Sydney nightspot Ivy late Saturday night after a day of revelry at Good Vibrations music festival.

Spies say Michael and Sheridan got along like a house on fire, hanging out most of the night, before the Faith singer kicked on to Oxford St day club Phoenix.

“It was amazing to meet a music legend like George Michael,” was all Sheridan — pictured here with the Fast Love singer and a pal from Adelaide — said yesterday.

Reviews of Faith Remastered

Rolling Stones gives Faith: Special Edition four stars.

Why wasn’t George Michael’s “Hard Day” one of the biggest hits of 1988? Because every other song on his album already seemed to be on the charts. Faith — which produced six Top Five singles — established Michael as a full-grown Brit-funk stud, with “I Want Your Sex” setting up his female fans for years of disappointment. The album holds up as one of the Eighties’ smartest megapop statements, full of passion and surefire hooks. This edition adds a CD of 12-inch mixes and B sides (check out Shep Pettibone’s nine-minute “Hard Day” mix) and a DVD of videos, so you can see George write “Explore Monogamy” on some lucky lady’s bare flesh in lipstick.

The Washington Post also has a review:

Twenty-four years on, “Faith” still represents the apotheosis of Michael’s career, the moment when everything was just right: He was newly soulful, but still interested in crafting mammoth pop melodies. He was serious, but not yet insufferable. Now stricken with what the British tabloids are calling “creative malaise,” Michael hasn’t released an album of new material in almost seven years, and an album of good material in going on 15.

Faith Remastered, A Short Review from a Long-time Fan

I have to admit that I haven’t had the kindest thoughts about the remastered Faith collections coming out on February 1.  Don’t get me wrong … I love Faith and my memories of 1987-1988 are filled with the joy of being a George Michael fan and seeing and hearing him everywhere.  You’d turn on MTV, and it was always premiering the newest George Michael video or giving news of the Faith tour. It was the best time to be a George Michael fan, at least for me.

When I heard about this remastered Faith, I felt a little jaded.  Perhaps if it had been released in 2012, which would have been the 25th anniversary of Faith, I wouldn’t have felt like they were trying to profit off of Faith, while the faithful fans wait for a new George Michael CD. Yeah, it’s fun that GeorgeMichael.com looks like a George Michael web site in 1987 would have looked. But I lived Faith. It’s funny now to get press information that Faith was released in November 1987 … yeah, on November 2, 1987, in the U.S. I still remember.

I have Faith on CD, cassette, and LP.  At first, I wasn’t even going to buy this remastered collection. Faith always sounded great, and I’m not sure I would be able to tell the difference with the remastered CD.  However, when I looked at the song list of the B sides, I knew why this collection was something a George Michael fan, even one who thought she had every Faith-related thing, would want.

Yes, you can get “Fantasy” (one of my all-time favorites) on other George Michael CDs. Yes, the instrumentals of “Faith” and “Kissing a Fool” are nice to have, but it’s George Michael’s voice that I want to listen to.  And, yes, it’s nice to have the remixes for “Hard Day” (a song I always thought deserved to be released from the album) and “Monkey.”

Ultimately, it’s the song, “I Believe When I Fall in Love,” that changed my mind about this collection. I used to listen to this song all the time on my cassette single—or cassingle—as we used to call them. And since my pink boom box long ago started eating my cassettes, having this little gem alone on CD is why any long-time fan would want to buy one of the remastered Faith collections. I’m sure many George Michael fans, especially if you became a George Michael fan later, may have missed out on this song and “Love’s in Need of Love Today.”

Since I wasn’t privy to some of the cool stuff from the deluxe edition, I can’t recommend shelling out $141, unless you’re a real collector.  If you’re like me and the music is why you continue to be a George Michael fan, then the special edition or remastered edition should make you happy.

The year 2011 marks my 26th year as a George Michael fan and my 14th year running this George Michael fan site.  This new collection reminds me of just why I’ve been a George Michael for as long as I have. Yes, I still have faith in George Michael’s music.
