Rolling Stone
YOGfriend Pat writes:
The following are excepts from Rolling Stone magazine Dec.
7th, 2000 issue on the 100 best pop songs ever.
Faith came in at #53 and they said
"'I Want Your Sex' is about fucking, but 'Faith' doesn't even get to the
heavy-petting stage," George Michael has said in the past. "'Faith' was
inspired by a couple of relationships that didn't happen." The title song
of his 1987 solo debut, "Faith" was an inspired statement of purpose,
an old-school rock & roll pledge with state-of-the-art production
that helped define the sound of 1987.
Just a year earlier, Michael left Wham!, a British duo specializing
in catchy but disposable pop songs. "Faith" - the album and single - found
Michael striking the most effective balance between Wham!-era pop tartiness
and the overreaching attempts at seriousness of such later albums as Listen
Without Prejudice Vol. 1. The song was driven by a tough-minded, strummy
riff - and its sales (the album eventually sold some 14 million copies)
were driven even further by a video that nailed Michael's leather-jacket-and-ripped-jeans
sex-symbol status.
According to Michael, the song is about "just the idea of seeing someone
and knowing that they're going for you, knowing that it's a possibility
but, as much as it would be fun, it wouldn't be a very good idea."
Careless Whisper came in at #89 and they said
The song that would help George Michael make the great leap from pop act
to major player was written when the teenage Michael - then called Georgios
Panayiotou - was working as a restaurant DJ in London. "I can remember
very vaguely where I was when I wrote things after Wham! got off the ground
- but with 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly the time and place,"
Michael has said. "I was handing the money over to the guy on the bus
and I got this line, the sax line - der-der-der-der, der-der-der-der .
. . I worked on it for about three months in my head." The song, Michael
said, was inspired by his being a "two-timing bastard" with a number of
young women.
Later, Michael got a little help finishing the song from
his Wham! partner, Andrew Ridgeley. It was on the first Wham! demo but
wasn't a hit until much later, when another version, recorded with longtime
associate Chris Porter, was a smash in most of the world as a George Michael
solo single, but in America the label credited the record to Wham! Featuring
George Michael.
As YOGfriend Pat says, not bad considering it's the U.S. and unless they
have something negative or semi-negative to say about George, nothing
is said.

The Press on George's Sunday Times Remarks
YOGfriend Pat tells us:
Today's (October 27th,2000) New York Daily News' Rush &
Molloy column has the following article:
Imagine no possessions
After George Michael made his whopping $2.1 million investment in musical
history by buying John Lennon's "Imagine"-era piano, he announced that
he would soon send it back to Liverpool's Beatles Museum for display.
However, a statement he made following his purchase was far less charitable.
After gushing about "Imagine," calling the song "the symbol by which we
remember a zenith in the humanity of popular culture," Michael went on
to say that he "wanted to keep (the piano) out of tiny hands in Tokyo,"
a comment that will surely warm the heart of Yoko Ono.

Equality Rocks
YOGfriend Dave says there is a small picture and article
about George in the October 30th, 2000 issue of US Magazine.
On page 3 of the magazine is a small picture of George and Garth Brooks
singing "Freedom" together at the Equality Rocks concert. It is followed
by this small article:
GARTH AND GEORGE JUST SAY NO
Garth Brooks and George Michael performed at the Washington, D.C. Equality
Rocks concert in April, but you won't see them on VH1's October 27 special
about the event. The singers refused to give permission to the Human Rights
Campaign (HRC), the national gay-rights group that organized the four-hour
concert, to use footage of their performances or even mention their names
during the special, hosted by Melissa Etheridge. Michael never gave HRC
a reason for his refusal, while Brooks's rep said the country crooner
didn't sign off because the show was never intended for future television
broadcasts. Michael's rep did not return our call.

George Learns the Difference Between Writing for Members Online and The
Sunday Times
It seems that George wasn't happy with the way The Sunday
Times treated his article on his thoughts on music in England. He
was so displeased that his people contacted Music365
and Q
and asked that they print the unedited letter. WorldPop also seems to
have the entire
letter George wrote to the media regarding The Sunday Times'
editing... but don't quote me on that. ;-)
Music365 also has a section where fans can agree
or disagree with George.

George to Record on Lennon Piano
According to the Associated Press, George told Capital FM
listeners about his recent purchase of John Lennon's piano: "I think
I'll hold on to it for a couple of months and see if I can get it on to
my new record and then it's going back to the museum in Liverpool where
I think it rightly belongs." He also downplayed the idea that his
composition would be up to the standards of Lennon's "Imagine."
"It'll probably be 'Chopsticks' in comparison,'' he
said.
